Will There be a Rematch?
Is a King Kong vs Godzilla remake in the works by Universal Pictures and Toho Company? Is there any truth to a 2010 King Kong vs Godzilla remake? With both monsters rumored to be releasing new movies in the United States soon for new audiences, the demand for a King Kong vs Godzilla remake is high. With new advances in special effects and the simplicity of movie distribution there is no doubt that both gargantuas would have many more fans to add to their cult fan base with a cool King Kong vs Godzilla remake. The truth is that I am a die-hard fan of the two and would love to see a King Kong vs Godzilla remake in my lifetime.
Before discussing the feasibility of a King Kong vs Godzilla remake, let us examine the early 1960's and examine the original movie featuring the battle of the two behemoths. From the start there had been legal copyright issues because the genesis of the idea had Frankenstein, but Universal Studios did not own rights of the Frankenstein name. RKO, however, did license the KK name to a producer (even though there was a legal threat regarding who owned the copyright of the monster-sized ape). Similar legal issues continue to be plague a King Kong vs Godzilla remake.
Since stop animation was so expensive, U.S. movie studios would not fund this project, but Toho Studios was interested. Toho's atomic powered dinosaur was sagging in the box office. The giant lizard was about to go in a different direction and this movie was about to showcase comedy elements that was missing from their first two dark monster movies. This film also featured very cheap. However Japanese audiences loved the film. It was re-released two times, and they wanted a King Kong vs Godzilla remake in the future. The U.S. English edited version was horrible by any critical analysis, so it's not like fans were screaming for a King Kong vs Godzilla remake. After this bomb both monsters were no longer taken seriously by U.S. audiences for a long time as major box offices draws, and there was no hype for a King Kong vs Godzilla remake.
The first true talk about a King Kong vs Godzilla remake was in 1992. However, Toho was dissuaded by lawyers due to copyright issues with the ape and even the Toho KK robot double. It should be noted that interest in KK wasn't all that strong back in 1992 anyway; it was only until Peter Jackson's KK movie with CGI that interest in the monster has been rekindled, which sparked King Kong vs Godzilla remake news.
Speaking of CGI, another major obstacle in a King Kong vs Godzilla remake besides the legal issues includes Toho's tradition of using costumes and miniatures instead of CGI monsters. Mainstream English audiences would prefer the King Kong vs Godzilla remake to look modern and not cheesy.
